Kefalos Channels Creativity Into Books for Children

Author Lori Kefalos is an electrical engineer by day and a children’s book author in her spare time. The Barberton native, who worked for many years as a machine control engineer at Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company before relocating to New York City five years ago, said writing is her creative outlet.
“When you think of engineer versus writer, you might think, ‘oh, the creativity is the writing part’,” she said.
Although typically, people either possess predominantly left brain skills such as math and science, or lean more toward artistic right brain activities, Kefalos believes the engineering career field requires both.
“The engineer is creative, as well,” she said. “If you look at tire building machines and even tires themselves, they are engineered products that take a lot of creativity.”

Queens-based author releases picture book on bullying

Queens-based children’s book author, L.A. Kefalos, is hoping that her new picture book can help communities end the problem of bullying.
“A. Blob on a Bus” is Kefalos’ second book in a three-part series centered around the purple, slug-like bully, A. Blob. In the first book, readers were asked to view life from the bully’s perspective. In “A. Blob on a Bus”, the book explores the issue of bullying through the perspective of the bystander and asks children what would they do in the situation.
“We all have a responsibility to watch out for one another and we are stronger when working together,” Kefalos, a Glendale resident, said.

Goodyear Pinewood Derby Team Races to End Bullying in Out of the Box Derby

Each year, teams from The Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company form to compete in the Out of the Box Derby, an event designed to put engineers’ skills to the test while also raising money for United Way of Summit County, an organization dedicated to bringing education, healthcare, and financial aid to those in need. Last year, nearly 250 associates participated in the event, raising more than $3,000 for the campaign. This year on October 9th, in addition to raising money for United Way, one team was also racing to bring awareness to another cause: bullying.
In honor of National Bullying Prevention Month, Goodyear electrical controls engineer Lori Kefalos and fellow team members John Bucey and Jim Goldston, both mechanical engineers, created a special car christened “Bullies Finish Last”...
